About HVAC DIY Help

Hi — I'm Scott. I'm an HVAC technician who's spent decades working across the trades: heating and cooling, plus just about everything else that goes into building and fixing a house.

I started HVAC DIY Help for a simple reason: homeowners get stuck with small problems, confusing advice, and service calls that cost more than the fix. A lot of what goes wrong with a heating or cooling system is diagnosable and fixable by a careful homeowner — a clogged drain, a dirty filter, a dead capacitor, a thermostat that just needs setting up right.

What this site is for

  • Safe homeowner fixes, explained step by step in plain language
  • "Check this first" troubleshooting, so you can rule out the simple stuff before calling anyone
  • Knowing when to call a pro — because the smartest DIY skill is recognizing the jobs that aren't DIY: refrigerant, gas, high voltage, and anything you're not comfortable with

What this site is not

This isn't a substitute for a licensed technician, and it isn't going to turn you into one. Every guide here sticks to the safe side of the line on purpose, and each one tells you where that line is. If you're ever unsure, call a professional — that's always the right answer.

I also make short video versions of this stuff on TikTok and YouTube as @hvac_diy_help. Same deal there: real fixes, no fluff, honest about when to call for help.
